7316The way to determine vintage of any Philips family tube, and the tubes of other manufacturer's as well, is to understand the codes used to identify tube type, manufacture origin, and manufacture date. Most Philips tubes had a mostly straightforward coding system. In the specific case of the 7316, what you would like to know is the type, factory the tube was manufactured at, and when it was manufactured. For the 7316, the type codes ranged from Ct0, which was the long plate D-getter tube, to the Ct5, which had short plates and a small o-getter. The Ct0 was the only long plate type and it dates back to the late 1950s. By about 1960 and onward, until the end of production in what looks like the mid'ish 1970s, all 7316s had short plates and varied, at least by what could be easily seen, with three getter styles. A large O-getter, a heavy D-/stirrup-shaped getter - not to be confused with the earlier long plate/D-getter tube - and a small o-getter. While I've seen a tube or two that wasn't made by Philips/Amperex labled as a 7316, Philips introduced this tube type as an industrial tube, hence its 7XXX designation, and only produced it in the Heerlen, Holland plant. To my ears all the short plate tubes, designated Ct1 through Ct5, sound the same regardless of vintage or type code. The long plate tube, the Ct0, sounds very different. Which is better? Short or long plate? Well, both. The short plate tubes are fast, crisp, punchy with crystalline clarity. The long plate tube pretty much sounds like a long plate Amperex 12AU7/ECC82 of the same vintage, which is softer/more lush. Pleb that I am, I actually usually prefer the short plate types, but in some systems the long plate tube can be stunningly good. I think the 7316 is just a nice tube, on the short list of very good tubes in the 12AU7/ECC82 family. New ones always test very close between their sections and also very close among different tubes. It looks like production tolerances were kept tight. They are VERY quiet (though they weren't designed for low noise applications, so says the Philips datasheets) both electrically and mechanically, and they're very long-lived. In my experience they're otherwise entirely troublefree.
