official review!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First off all, I'ld like to thank the forum, of which without the assistance, knowledge, and most of all, understanding  I would not have made it. LOL

Anywhy,

Well, I picked it up Saturday morning after a VERY hard night of drinking and poker (I won  ) I felt terrible, my head was pounding. I set the alarm for 8:30AM, but jumped out of bed anyway at 6:00. I just couldn't sleep, I can't imagine why.

Showered, popped an Advil, went to Starbucks, and was knocking on their glass door at 9:00 sharp!

My salesman was on vacation so I was referred to another salesman. He got my insurance info, grabbed the keys, and I was off on a test drive.

Mind you at this point my worries about them screwing me on the price took the best of me. Yeah yeah yeah, I looked at the car, fine, fine, fine ,fine, "Can we get this paperwork thing over?" I asked.

He said: "I'm waiting for the salesmanager to get out of a meeting."

Uh oh.

Well, he shuffled me into this other dudes office where he tries to sell you dealer packages and crap....While this guy is giving me the schpele on rust proofing and other BS my foot is tapping nervously because I thought THIS guy was the finance manager....I'm like, "Look dude, just get me the contract already." Obviously he knew I was anxious to get out of his office. (Little did he know I was using this as a bargain chip to talk him down to $589 for The Protector package "A"  ) He bit and took the deal so I could get out of there. If you don't know, it's normally $1,200. My buddy works at a Toyota dealership and couldn't believe I got it so cheap. I really didn't know, but the protector package is definitely worth doing from what I've been told. (Northern climate)

Anyway,

Off to the finance managers office. I shook his hand and whipped out the check. (I knew at this point since the Salesmanager didn't come back into play the price was good) He ran through extended warranty coverage. I told him "I'm not interested"  I was able to talk him down to $1070 on a 7yr/60k mile extended warranty (It's upgradeable in mileage and transferrable) Good deal. I signed the papers and at that point, the stress was gone and turned INSTANTLY into elation and excitement!

MSRP! No markup whatsoever.

I got back out into the parking lot to find EVERYONE at the dealership gawking at the car. Mine was apparently the first one they've ever got. The other silver one had not arrived yet. So porters were being told to get back to work, and customers were walking around the lot with no salesman to talk to.  It was kind of funny.

One of the salesmen asked to go for a ride, I said "hop in."

Not 2 minutes into the ride he started mouthing off: "We've been trying to talk sense into the salesmanager for 5 months. We were telling him 'You're crazy' for not marking these cars up. People across the country are charging $5k over!!!"

I said: "Yeah I know." Grinning ear to ear  "Thank god he didn't listen to you....now get out."

Back at the dealership I walked straight into the salesmanger's office. Shook his hand and said "Thanks".....(I never thought I'd say thanks for paying sticker for any car.) The guys at the dealership were top notch and very professional. Not pushy at all, and I come to find out the salesmanager is the owner's Son! Which means his family would make the most money on markup. He says "We just don't do that here. We want your repeat business."

If you've kept reading this far.....get a life. just kidding   Sorry to ramble.

On to the good stuff!!!

O.K. So when leaving the dealership I immediately starting giving about 1/4 throttle pulses just to feel the potential, BOY is it there! The car handled way tighter than the C I test drove and the brakes were instantaneous at the slow speed I was travelling. I got home and let my neighbors drool over it for a while. I phoned my buddy who works at Elmhurst Toyota (HUGE Mopar fan) and gave him the good news. He insisted I bring it to his dealership to show the Toyota geeks what a real car is (no offense toyota geeks.  ) When I got there the whole service department could NOT keep their eyes off of it. I was even surprised how much they could not say enough awesome things about the car. You'd think I pulled in with a Lambourghini or something. Anyway, I left a little while later with my buddy, picked up his wife, and we went out for dinner. (Of course my girlfriend went on a trip to Wisconsin to see her family. I called her, she was giddy as a school girl, but all I could say was "tough" enjoy your cheese up der!)

Here's where it gets interesting.

We were on the highway (short run) going back to my friend's house after dinner when this little riced out eclipse flies up next to me and then swerves into my lane, as if to cut me off, but he was going faster. KnowwhatImean?

My friend Bob: "Get 'em Matt."

Me: "I can't, I have to take it easy."

Well, I saw him weaving in and out of traffic (light traffic) and couldn't resist. I thought. "I'll just speed up a bit and overtake him at 90 or so."

Well, I give it about half throttle and this thing downshifts only 1 gear and you could feel the torque big time. I could only imagine what 3rd would have been like at full throttle.

I catch up to the guy, the thottle is about 2/3-3/4 RPM's about 4500-5000 max. Nothing severe. I absolutely FLYYYY past this kid, look down and the speedometer says 140.....Yes 140 MPH!!! My friends wife verified this by screaming it in my ear.  I think she said slow down too, but I couldn't hear that part very well over her husband saying FASTER!

This was NOT punched, this was NOT redlined, with 2 passengers in the car, a full tank of gas, my 220 pound ass in the driver seat, the sunroof OPEN and the car STILL wanted more more more. Unbelievable. I can't wait until it's broken in.

Here's the pictures I promised you:

Look at those friggin' wheels! The cool thing is, they look even bigger from the further away you look.

The front end looks so mean from this angle.  "Mr. Vader? Your ride is here!"

The armaments:

It's what's on the inside that counts.

Sit cho fine ass down!

Don't mess with this.

You just lost rice boy, and in case you have any doubts what this is. See my trunk lid.

Some more impressions:

The paint is better than I imagined. Sure there's some orange peel, but not as much as I noticed on the CV showroom floor car. I had no idea there was so much metal flake in it. So much in fact, it almost looks gray close up in bright sunlight. There's flecks of Bluish purple, green, and silver. I love it.

The interior is very comfortable. The seats hold you in place, and the way I took a couple entrace ramps on the highway there's no denying their sportiness. In fact, I've sat in seats that were too bolstered, that put too much pressure on your sides. Not these seats. With the faux suede inserts I think it compromises well.

The wheels are beeee-yoooo-tiful! The clean up relatively easy, but the best part is you can clean the inside and brake caliper without having to take the wheel off. My hand fits fine in between.

The exhaust has a nice quiet bass tone to it outside the car at idle. You feel it more than hear it. When you open it up on the road even just the little bit, (not even at WOT) it absolutely growls!

Road noise, I didn't notice anything that isn't normal for a car with 20" friggin' wheels and low profile tires. This car is QUIET! Don't let any Motor Trend, C&D editor tell you differently. The sound proofing rubber lip around the doors and windows makes this very smooth and quiet. No wind noise that I could notice yet.

Going over bumps is so smooth. I've heard people say it's a little too bumpy. Well, you guys need to drive a pickup truck for 5 years. Then and only then do you even get an opinion.  This thing is WAY smooth over bumps. Not as smooth as a caddy, but for how it hugs the turns with no roll I can't picture it being any better of a compromise. Sure you feel the bumps, but here's what that's called: "FEEDBACK" not a bumpy ride. There's a big difference.

Gadgetry?......I don't know, I can't work much of it yet.  I know where the loud pedal and the steering wheel are.....That's good enough for now. When I get time to read the owners manual I'll let you know.

For the record. I took entrace ramps at speeds I would take in my Vette. Granted it's no vette, but I haven't found a big difference.....yet....and I'm on stock 245 tires. These things hold VERY well. I was getting some understeer with front wheel skid, but it was COMPLETELY controllable. Nothing scary whatsoever. The chassis is SO damn stiff It's amazing. I felt no flex. Just the roll that this car was engineered to have anyway. I've driven many a big cars like crown vics, caddy's, and Impalas. NOTHING even comes close to rigidity and firmness......Beemers are a different story, but they're priced right for it. The SRT8 is a steal for what it gives.

Anybody contemplating buying a fully loaded C at sticker. You really should considering spending just a little more. It's worth it just for the look of the wheels and performance of the brakes alone.

Thanks everybody.

-Matt

Hey Rambit..nice to hear from you. Where I live, I have seen a couple of srt8s ...Last week, at the valet of a local fine eatery, mine was parked right next to a silver one.

Everyone wants to run against me here, little shit cars included. Its funny. I won't waste my gas..the only serious ones that I have had some fun with are :

2 GTOS (could not tell if 04s or 05s, beat both by car and a half - -one form a standstill, and the other from a 35ish roll, over 1/8th mile), several 350zs (no contest), one STI (pretty close till high rpms), several GT stangs( not too tough), one Mercedes E 4something or other(no problem), several magnums (not real close), several g35's (cake), uncounted numbers of STS cads, (not a problem), one ford lightninig truck (moderately close for a few seconds, than pretty easy), and one Lexus 430 (laugher). In each case, the other made the first move or overture.....

Have not seen an AMG yet, which is good cause I I'd be "no problem", or a M3 or M5 (depends on the year on the 5, the three might be pretty damn close, at least off the line), a CTS-v (good driver would probably edge us).

Of course, I hve been challenged by dozens of others who have no business trying, and several serious contenders, when I have my kids...which I won't do. Overall, it seems like I can't go out without someone trying it.

Ok, this is a perfect topic for what was going to be my next post, but this is a better spot for it cause it's right on topic. I'm taking it easy with the SRT-8 now. It's MAKING me respect it.

I just got back from a board meeting and it is raining cats and dogs out side right now. Here's what happend on the way home.

I am cruising along the freeway doing about 65 MPH, not wanting to get home too fast cause I want to spend more time in the SRT-8 and I know if I drive my usual speed, I'll be home way too soon. Anyway, I see mustang headlights (I own a 94' Convertible too) fast approaching in my drivers side mirror.

I figure the guys got to be doing about 85 MPH, so I wait until he gets right up to about my rear bumper and I press the gas down about another quarter of the way and the car lurches forward as he starts to pass me. Turns out to be a Mustang Cobra, which I know is no match at all for the SRT-8 unless it is HEAVILY modified, which this didn't sound like it was.

Of course as JMAtt said (JMatt I still owe you a response to your PM) the exhaust really growls when you give it some gas.

I'm up to 85 by the time he's past the front bumper and at 90 mph passing him since he never got further than a few feet away from the front bumper anyway.

Keep in mind it's raining hard and I just wanted to have a little fun. I had it, so I ease off the gas and slow it down, since I am getting closer to my exit.

He keeps on the gas and get's over into my lane so I decide to pace him until my offramp. His turn signal goes on before mine so it looks like we are getting off at the same exit.

As we approach the light at the end of a long offramp, it turns yellow. We're both doing about 45 mph and we are both in one of the two lanes for the offramp that only goes left.

I'm waiting for him to slow down and since he doesn't neither do I.

He whips into the corner and his tail end keeps going straight as he turns the front end into a hard left to go underneith the freeway.

I'm only about a car length behind him and bank hard around the corner still doing about 45 pmh into a 90' degree turn, only the SRT-8 doesn't slide the rear tires, but grips right up, so much so that I am instantly right beside the Mustang as he is attempting to overcorrect his spinout.

I realize in the next second that if he is not careful, he's going to fishtail right into me. We are both pointing towards the underpass now and it is a two lane road.

I don't even think about it as I give the car enough gas to shoot past him. As I do, I look in my rearview mirror only to see his rear end whip into my lane as the SRT-8 is moving out of the way. This happens all in the space of about 2-3 seconds.

Now I been a drag racer for several years and I am used to hooking a car straight from a tail spin, so I felt a little more confident about what I was about to do going into that turn, but I tell you even I realized that if I'd been driving a lighter car, I would have ended up in an ugly accident.

I have MUCH more respect for the Chrysler engineering team tonight. This car handles well enough for me and this is not a statement I make lightly. By the way, I have the AS tires.
Like I said, the SRT-8 is MAKING me respect it, and I will not be playing around anymore in the rain, but at least I know that if I need to move out of the way of something quickly in the rain, the cars going to stay on the road. Be safe Y'all, cause you can't have fun in a totalled car.

Wow, the Charger SE sure looks like a good value!

3.5L V-6, 5-speed automatic, power windows and locks, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, AM/FM CD, A/C, front driver and passenger lumbar adjust, 4wheel abs disc brakes, ESP, keyless entry, sentry key, cruise control, rear defrost, front and rear climate control outlets, for $23K. No fog lights, no aluminum wheel options, no u-connect or sirrius options, no leather or adjustable pedals options... but $23K MSRP for all those features is a bargain if you ask me.
