Quad 22L Loudspeakers - review by Colin MacKenzie
When Quad brought out their 'baby' 11L speakers we didn't realise the other delights Quad were to have in store for us.
The Quad 22L are three way rear ported speakers. The three drive units consist of 6.5" Kevlar units for bass, one for mid range and a 25mm tweeter for the high frequencies. For the uninitiated the drivers are the moving parts which created the sound.
In my experience I have discovered that some manufacturers who produce outstanding two drive unit speakers produce disappointing results when they introduce more complicated models. I was therefore prepared for disappointment when I first switched on these speakers.
In this case I was more than pleasantly surprised. Immediately I heard the 22L's it is obvious there is something special about these. I tried them on a variety of different equipment and quickly realised that they differ in sound quite considerably depending on the amplifier and cd being used. Whilst all speakers to some degree will alter the sound characteristics depending on the source, these were transformed as you improved the front end and amplifier.
The bass is very tight and extended. I tried them close to a wall, here the bass was more extended but a bit 'plummy' for my personal taste. I preferred the speakers away from the wall. Given space around them the detail and wide sound stage was exceptional. The top end was very smooth with no trace of sibilance. Often speakers which appear exceptionally clear at first audition start to 'spit' after a while, this sibilance is quite annoying and fortunately absent from this model.
Priced at under £900 these speakers cannot be considered 'cheap' but the build and sound quality is something I would normally associate with speakers selling at £1700. Obviously designed to be partnered with high quality equipment (Quad perhaps!) these speakers will show up deficiencies in hi-fi not made of the 'right stuff'. They offer smooth, relaxed but detailed listening on a wide variety of music. In addition to superb sound their 'piano' finish is to an exceptionally high standard. A speaker which makes the hair on the back of my head tingle, not many do that. Confidently recommended providing you do not have a mini system!
