Demo'd the 801D

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I listened to the 801D's at my local dealer here in Sacramento (Northern Cal). They were not broken in and right out of the box they had phenomenal transparency and clarity. They did not carry the 801 in the past and were not a big fan of it. One of the sales guys told me he'd have to get a real job so he can buy a pair  . The other one who I have worked with for about 1 1/2 years in building my two channel system is seriously considering getting the 801D. He wasn't that impressed with the old one compared to what he had and is now shocked to think he wants to replace what he has with the 801D, especially right out of the box.

The 801D's were hooked up to a T+A PA 1530R amp at 170 watts channel. And the T+A 1240 R CD player. I am not sure which Transparent cables were used, but they were on the upper end. I also demo'd the 801D's with a Marantz SACD player and it was like wine it was so nice. The Marantz (sorry didn't get the model) isn't as nice a red book player as the T+A, but Diana Krall's SACD (Love Scenes) was absolutely remarkable on it.

I listened to Harry Belfonte: Live at Carngie Hall, Diana Krall: Love Scenes and Cleveland Orchestra: Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and DiMeola, McLaughlin & De Lucia: Friday Night in San Francisco. The staging of where the music was recorded was very evident. I could hear Harry Belfonte breath in before he sang (this is an extremely fun recording).

I am waiting to listen to the 803D which isn't in yet. I ordered the 805 Sigs then found out about the new series, so I'm holding off. My dealer is going to let me take home the new 805S to demo at home because they are "supposed" (per literature) to be as nice as the 805 Sigs, but I personally don't think they will be. Pretty cool he's going to let me demo the new 805S at home, eh?

This Saturday I went to a dealer to listen to the 803Ds.
These things are really HUGE. they dwarfed the old 802s that were standing besides them.

I could compare the new 803D to the old 802, unfortunately they were not connected to the same equipment.
The 803Ds were driven by a clasé CA201 amp, a Thule PR350B pre-amp and a marantz sacd/dvd player.
The 802s were on the new Rotel RSP-1098 pre-amp and RMB1075 amp, with a rotel dvd player.
For surround listening an "old" HTM1 and 804s were driven by a Thule PA350.

They both sounded very good, but very different. It was like listening to speakers of different brands.
I wasn't instantly blown away by the sound the new nautilus offered. They sounded a tiny bit like speakers.
Of cource the 803Ds are only in use for half a week so they are most likely not entirely broken in yet.
The highs to mid-ends on the 803Ds do sound incredible detailed and lifelike, in comparison the 802 sounds a bit muffled.
This only shows how good the new diamond tweater and other refinements really are!
In SACD surround mode the differences between the HTM1 and the 803Ds are clearly audible. The HTM is very good, but the 803Ds are just that better.
The 802s low-end is still a LOT better, it goes into subwoofer levels (you can feel the punch in your stomach) but when it's going really low you can hear the wind blowing through the flowport at the bottom.

In my opinion the full potential of the new diamond tweeter can only be used when playing SACD or 24/96 DTS sources, which go higher than the 20kHz cutoff that cd offers. Using ordinairy cds is like driving a ferrari only in first gear.

Many people are hoping that the 803D will be the new 802 (pricewise).
But I doubt if they will ever reach the low end of the old 802.
(Therefore it's really tempting to buy a pair of demo 802s, which would cost me the same as the new 803D)

The dealer mentioned that the new 802D will be the best speaker price/performance-wise of the new range.
"It's already better than the old 800" he said , which in his eyes makes it a super bargain, considering it costs 12.000 compared to 18.000 for the old 800.
I admit he is a B&W adept so he could be a bit biased
But he knows what he's talkin about. A few months ago was able to sneak in the test laboratory in Belgium (which normally is totally off-limits) where all new nautilus models get there final tweaking and approval by the Belgian importer before being released.

In the end considering the price they cost I'm not entirely convinced yet. More testing required...

Posts: 26  the 802D kicks ass!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few hours ago I strolled into the local hifi store in Brussels for some cables. They had the new 802D in demo and when the manager asked if I would like to listen to it I didn't have to think twice.

Setup:
802D
some pre-amp I have never seen in my life (sorry)
marantz cd player
2 CAM-350 monoblocks
monster cable

he put on some classical music to get started. Very nice.
Then he put in a jazz cd and put on a track that had 2 contrabasses playing. Unbelievably real! You could hear everything these instruments were producing. There was a guy in the store that plays the contrabas and he couldn't believe his ears.
I asked the manager what he would choose when he could have an old N800 or a new 802D. He just smiled and pointed to the 802. (the store has the old N800 on sale for $11.000 so that's the same price as a new 802D)
He also put on a jazz cd with a woman singing. As lifelike as the contrabasses.

now I need to block this experience from my memory and go out and buy these second hand 802s

Posts: 22  Had a long demo of the 803S and 803D yesterday at Grahams HifI London.

803S – Compared to old 803 it looks a little smaller but after measuring both it’s because the 803S is a little fatter and deeper but the same height, making it look like its shorter. Sound quality is noticeable better even though the new speakers are not fully run in yet. Every aspect of the sound just has that little bit more: Bass faster and ever so slightly deeper, midrange seams just a bit more open, treble had a tiny bit more energy but I think that will change when run in more, it also seamed to have more detail and slightly less grain in the upper registers.

803D – This speaker looks so cool in the flesh. Its slightly wider and deeper then the 803S and quite a bit taller. The tweeter body is longer and finished in the shinny material used on the marlin heads of the 802 and up, while the 803S has a plastic tweeter head. With the covers off those triple base drivers give the speaker a more aggressive look but this is not at all how they sound. I was concentrating on the treble at first eager to see what the diamond tweeters would sound like. The first thing I noticed was that the very high treble output was slightly down compared to the 803S but in no way was there less detail. In fact I found it even easer to hear what the drummer was doing with his symbols with this speaker. I wasn’t sure which output level was right until I heard voices then I was sold. This is the first speaker I have ever heard that gets its “s”es just right. They are not exaggerated in any way but just sounds like real humans do. I had thought the 803S controlled its sibilance just right but when we switched back it’s was no competition the 803D just does it in such a natural way. The mid-band is very similar but because you are not distracted by any high level over emphasis you hear a lot more. When I switched back to the 803S again I could hear all the new stuff that I had heard on the 803D mid-band it’s just that I had missed it the first time. The 803D also sound a lot bigger I don’t think they have any more base extension but there is more power in the bass.

The system was set up to replicate my home system and consisted of:

Arcam fmj CD33 CD player
Arcam fmj C30 Pre-Amp
2 * Arcam fmj P35 Power Amps bi-amping
QED XT400 speaker cables.

The P35 is 100W per channel amp and is not known for having massive current reserves. For stereo listening at loud but comfortable levels the bi-amp combo had no problems controlling the 803S the 803D was also well controlled up to loudish levels (as loud as I would ever use them) but the base did seem to get a bit more flabby when you turned them up while the 803S was still in control. For movie use I would say you would need more amp power to drive the 803D’s but fortunately that is not a priority for me.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey Recruit. I am new to the site as well. I have the same problem as you do. I have owned a pair of N805's for about a year and a half and I actually love them. I mean really, whats not to love.

The new 805(S) arrived at my local dealer last week and I have been listening to them every day after work for the last 6 days for one hour each session. I absolutely love them. After listening to the new 805's at my dealer I listen for at least another hour at home with my current N805's. My opinions are as follows:

- The new 805(S) are not miles better than the old N805 but they have a more life like sound. I noticed that the bottom end is a little more tune full but the extention is roughly the same. I was listenting to some big bass jazz tracks and I notice that the bass had a little more body on the new 805(S)version. This could be attributed to the new crossover and stiffer box. The tweeter is a little faster and sounds more open. Less treble harshness is also apparent. Not to say that the old N805 is harsh. The source components that I was using at my dealer was the new Classe CDP100 and the CAP 2100.
They are a great match for the B&W's. I guess that's why B&W bought Classe. I was fortunate that the dealer had a pair of the old N805's in the same listening room so I could compare them back to back every day for my hour long listening sessions.

When I go home after leaving the dealer it seems that my old N805's sound better every time. I never once felt that I would be missing out if I didn't decide to upgrade.

After pondering on the the differences I have decided to give the New 805(S) a try. So I will be trading in my old pair. I hope I don't regret it. I still love the original N805.

My advise to anyone out there thinking about upgrading. If you can get a used pair for $1000 less than a new pair of $3500 805(S), I would suggest that route instead of upgrading. Spend the money you save on a good power cord for your source components. Hope this helps you in your decision.

My components are:
Arcam CD 23T
Arcam A22
Audioquest Python Cables.

根据最新报告,新的803D都比老的N802强得多.

新805S才比老的贵$500但是才用SIGNATURE技术比老SIGNATURE的$3500便宜$1000美元!

Posts: 6  I picked up my new pair of 805(S) on Friday evening. It's true what everyone is saying about them sounding better than the N805's right out of the box. I ran them in for the entire weekend non stop. When I went to bed Friday night I put my CD player on repeat. When I got up Sturday morning I couldn't wait to change the CD and continue to listen while I was making breakfast. I would recommend to anyone who is considering buying the new series to take them home to demo them if your dealer will let you.

Right out of the box they sounded allot better at home than the demo pair I was listening to at the dealer. I guess the room at the dealers store was bad for acoustics. Well any way let's cut to the chase.

By Sunday night I could already hear the difference from Friday night. The (S) tweeter is very open. On Friday I would say that the tweeter was laid back but by Sunday night That was no longer a true statement. I noticed in some earlier reviews people were going to purchase these babies for rears. It must be nice to be able to afford these for rears. I would recommned listening to them in a two channel situation before you allocate them to the rear channels. Just to hear what they are cable of. You will be amazed.

Because of the speed of the new 805(S) they can disappear easier than it's predecessor. I can see why B&W says it out performs the Signature model. It has more control in the top end. With the new crossover you will find the new 805(S) more likable, tuneful, and fast in the lower regions. You will also notice that the new model has more air around the instruments and vocals especially when playing jazz.

This speaker makes me want to buy more expensive gear to drive them. As good as my Arcam FMJ setup is, I would love to hear them with The new Classe CDP 100 and CAP 2100 in my living room.

They just keep getting better and better.

So far my dealer only has the (S) models of the new range. Stay tuned for my review of the diamond models once they get in. Let me know if you have a particular model that you want me to listen to for a second opinion if you like. I walk by my dealers store on my way home from work every day.
